Water purification in glass bottles with SteriPEN devices works!
While plastic, stainless steel& aluminum water bottles dominate the water bottle market, glass water bottles provide their own unique features that may suit your lifestyle and desire to be green. SteriPEN is happy to share that glass water bottles work effectively.
Some of the key benefits of glass water bottles are:
- BPA-free, phthalates, PVC, polycarbonates, lead and latex free as well. thus very low likelihood of toxins in the container
- Multi-purpose use: Not bottle of choice for a hardcore backpacker, but glass water bottles provide many options for use for weekend outdoors activity, at the house & at work.
- Glass and the silicon sleeves on many models are both dishwasher safe making glass water bottles easy to clean and re-utilize.
- Taste – There is some indication that stainless steel and/or aluminum containers leave a metallic taste to the water. Glass leaves no aftertaste.
Some downsides of glass water bottles are:
- Weight – Obviously glass is heavier than plastic water bottles and comparable to stainless steel/aluminum so may not be a good choice for hard core hiking & packpacking.
- Breakability – If you drop a glass bottle, you know what’s likely to happen. Brands such as LifeFactory have done a great job developing silicon sleeves to help reduce breakage.
- Glass bottles are not insulated so it’s unlikely you’ll be repurposing your glass water bottle for hot coffee, tea or soup along the trail.
LifeFactory Glass Water Bottles
LifeFactory is a quality manufacturer of glass water bottles located in Sausalito, CA USA.
LifeFactory provides several sizes that are 32 oz. or below. Remember, SteriPEN only recommends water purification 1 liter (32 oz.) or less per uv dosage. LifeFactory bottles include 9 oz., 16 oz. and 22 oz. glass containers.
The large diameter of the LifeFactory glass water bottles will accomodate all SteriPEN models. While the SteriPEN Pre-Filter does somewhat fit onto 22 oz. LifeFactory bottle, the seal is not perfect so we cannot recommend it. SteriPEN FitsAll Filter will work well.
LifeFactory sells their glass water bottles directly on their lifefactory.com, Amazon.com, and many other online venues you can explore at Google Shopping.
Takeya Water Bottles
Takeya USA, a subsidiary of Takeya Japan has been designing, manufacturing and marketing innovative food and beverage containers for the past 50 years.
Takeya markets their glass water bottles as simple, beautiful and efficient.
Takeya glass water bottles come in Classic 16 oz., Classic 22 oz. containers and an especially interesting, newly launched, modern 18 oz. design (far right in picture) and with many vibrant color choices.
We at SteriPEN have contacted Takeya to get the exact diameter of containers but are still awaiting a response. For now we can safely tell you that the Takeya glass water bottles work well with our tapered body style models: Classic, Traveler, Journey, Defender, & Emergency. For filtering water with a Takeya glass water bottle, utilize SteriPEN FitsAll Filter
