When I decided to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail in 2008 I knew I would need something to treat my water. At the suggestion of my older brother, I bought a Steripen Adventurer Opti.
I remember thinking that the idea of simply putting the wand into the water and waiting 90 seconds and then being able to safely drink the water seemed a little too good to be true. It took me just over 5 months to make it from Georgia to Maine and I used the Steripen every day during that time. What a fabulous invention! I LOVED the ease of it and how I was able to drink the water immediately.
When I had been hiking mountains all day and was hot and thirsty, it was heavenly to stop at a stream, use the pen and drink right away! And it was wonderful to taste fresh, cold water instead of the iodine or chemical aftertaste of some other treatments.
